My grandparents:

Walter Ryun RICHTER
Anita WINTERSTEEN

Walter Ryun RICHTER, was born on 29 OCT 1906 and it is believed that he was born near Naponee, Nebraska. He was one of four children born to Henry RICHTER and Nora RYUN.

Anita Mae WINTERSTEEN, was born on 16 FEB 1907 at Republican City, Nebraska. She was one of five children born to Shannon Ransler WINTERSTEEN Jr. and Lola Valentine SKEELS.

Walter RICHTER and Anita Mae WINTERSTEEN were married on 16 FEB 1928 in Hastings, Nebraska and to them 2 children were born:

(1) Guy W RICHTER, (Please note that the W does not stand for anything. It is believed to have represented the family names of Walter and Wintersteen.) b. 30 JAN 1931, where?, Nebraska, m. Joan SAYER on 02 FEB 1958 in Arapahoe, Nebraska. (Please write for more information);

(2) Rodney Jerol RICHTER b. 08 DEC 1936 at Scottsbluff, Nebraska, m. 18 NOV 1956 Naponee, Nebraska to Lorene AMMAN (Please write for more information);

Walter Ryun RICHTER grew up on a small farm in south central Nebraska near Naponee, Nebraska. Walter and Anita both attended high school in Republican City, Nebraska. It is wondered that maybe Anita's parents were against them getting married as on 16 FEB 1928, the day Anita turned 21, they were married and after a short time moved to Morrill, Nebraska. Walter and Anita had two children, Guy W and Rodney Jerol.

Anita was talented in music and art. In 1926 Anita helped put on a play, "Believe me Xantippa" on April 22, 23, 1926 to help earn money for the new first Alumni Association that was organized in 1925.

After they were married, Walter and Anita attended church in Henry, Nebraska and there Anita played the piano for church services.

After Rodney's birth, Anita was not a well woman. Then when Rodney was just under three years old, Anita was hospitalized with a tubular pregnancy and died. Anita RICHTER passed away on 05 OCT 1939 . She is buried in the Republican City Cemetery, Republican City, Nebraska. Walter then raised the boys with the help of relatives. After trying different jobs and taking a machine course for a metal lathe, Walter moved to Denver, Colorado for a short time and worked in a defense plant. Laura DUNCAN helped Walter take care of the boys. While in Denver, Walter married Ann WATTS. Ann had two boys too, but this marriage did not work out and they were soon divorced. When Rodney was five years old, Walter moved his family back to Naponee where his parents, Henry and Nora RICHTER helped raise Guy and Rodney. There Walter farmed with his father.

In 1957, Walter married Verlene LOWRY. Verlene had one son, Joe HORACEK. Joe was a Freshman in high school when Walter and Verlene were married. Walter and Verlene lived on the family farm which was located south and west of Naponee. Here they planted a row of several Evergreen trees.

In 1960, Walter and Verlene sold their farm and moved to Marshfield, Missouri where they bought and ran a dairy farm. In about 1967 Walter and Verlene moved into Marshfield. Walter was diagnosed with having cancer, and on 18 MAR 1970, Walter passed away. Walter was buried in Marshfield, Missouri. But in 1988, Verlene had his body moved to the Naponee Cemetery. She felt better about having Walter's body closer to family and if you look southwest from the Naponee Cemetery, you can see that row of trees Verlene and Walter planted on the old farm they lived on when they were first married.

Verlene continued to live in Marshfield, and later married Alvin BERTOLDIE, a retired barber. Alvin too became sick and passed away in ?1986. Verlene then moved to Sedalia, Missouri, the same city in which her son, Joe HORACEK and his wife Shirley live. Joe works at the college there in Sedalia and Shirley paints and sells her watercolor paintings. Joe and Shirley have no children.

My great-grandparents:

Shannon Ransler WINTERSTEEN Jr.
Lola Valentine SKEELS

Shannon Ransler WINTERSTEEN Jr. was born on 26 April 1863 at Huntsburg, Geauga County, Ohio. He was the second of two children born to Shannon Ransler and Abigail E. (BASQUIN) WINTERSTEEN. He was born just three days before this father died of typhoid fever at the Armory Square Hospital in Washington, D.C. The Civil War was then being fought, and his father was serving in the Union Army at the time of his death. In 1875, Shannon WINTERSTEEN Jr., his sister, Drette, mother, Abigail and step father, John HUBER moved to south central Nebraska near Republican City. With the exception of a few short intervals, Shannon lived his entire life in this area. Shannon's obituary says that as a young man he served as a rider for the Pony Express from Philipsburg, Kansas to Republican City, Nebraska. However, I know this to be wrong as the Pony Express was only in existence for an 18 month period around 1861. Shannon was only about two years old when the Pony Express stopped. I do believe he carried mail by horse between Philipsburg, Kansas and Republican City, Nebraska, but he was a contracted mail delivery person and cannot be classified as a Pony Express rider.

On 30 October 1884 he was united in marriage to Lola Valentine SKEELS. To this union three sons and two daughters were born:

(1) Arthur WINTERSTEEN b. ae 1885 died at 5 days;

(2) Lemuel W. WINTERSTEEN b. JUL 1886-7, Nebraska, d. 14 MAY 1939 (believed to have died in Alberta, Canada), m. 03 APR 1906 Harlan County, Nebraska to Agnes HUNTER, b. 24 DEC 1882, d. 03 DEC 1959. ;

(3) Gladys D. WINTERSTEEN b. 23 MAR 1892 Republican City, Harlan County, Nebraska d. 06 SEP 1983, Alma, Harlan County, Nebraska, buried in Orleans, Nebraska cemetery. Gladys was married four times, #1 m. 1910 to George Washington FARRINGTON, #2 WALSEBEN, #3 STEVENSON, and #4 m. 15 SEP 1949 at Franklin, Nebraska to Herman MALONE. Gladys had one son, Ross FARRINGTON who died in 1972;

(4) Vaude L. WINTERSTEEN b. 04 MAR 1898 Republican City, Harlan County, Nebraska, d. 11 AUG 1980, at the Veteran's Hospital in Prescott, Arizona and is buried in Yarnell, Arizona. Vaude was married 06 OCT 1936 at Mount County, Rose, Colorado to Eka Lucille DUNCAN who was born 06 NOV 1906 at Long Pine, Brown County, Nebraska to Walter DUNCAN (13 OCT 1880 - 09 JAN 1952) and Eka Myreatte PLOPPER (05 APR 1883 - 30 DEC 1922) . Vaude and Lucille had no children.

Vaude served in W. W. I and was a member of the DAV World War I Chapter of Yarnell, Arizona. Vaude was also a member of the Presbyterian Church, Masonic Blue Lodge of Republican City, Nebraska, Scottish Rite Consistry [sic] and Eastern Star. In later years he joined the Salvation Army. Vaude and Lucille lived most of their married years in the state of Colorado where Vaude was employed by the U.S. Government as a predatory control hunter. In 1973 they moved to Arizona.

After Vaude's death Lucille moved to Nebraska to be closer to her nephews, Rodney RICHTER and Guy RICHTER. Lucille died 21 DEC 1988 at Franklin County, Nebraska and is buried at Yarnell, Arizona. ;

(5) Anita Mae WINTERSTEEN b. 16 FEB 1907, Republican City, Harlan County, Nebraska d. 05 OCT 1939 Scottsbluff, Nebraska. More about Anita can be found in a separate section for her and her husband, Walter RICHTER. (See their section above. Please write for more information)

I would like to note that Shannon and Lola WINTERSTEEN also raised Daisy SKEELS, Lola's younger sister.

Shannon R. WINTERSTEEN Jr. engaged himself in various enterprises, but after a few years he established himself in a meat market and grocery business. He affiliated himself with the Masonic Order in the prime of his manhood. He had a kind, genial disposition, a natural lover of harmony which he found reflected in the great out doors and habitually spread good cheer with his friendly optimism wherever he went. He was generally recognized as a friend of little children and the feeble and unfortunate.

On July 24, 1939, just seven months before Shannon WINTERSTEEN's death, Ralph STODDARD wrote this letter to the Republican City Ranger Newspaper:

"Dear Editor: Our hero is none other than Shan R. Wintersteen. Shannie (to me) has probably forgotten the incident, I haven't.

"About fifty six years ago, five boys went swimming at Munson's Mill. It was Sunday, just after Sunday School. In those days, swimming on Sunday was a sin.

Stanton GOULD was in the crowd. Stanton couldn't swim, he just thought he could. It just happened that Stanton was going down for the third time when Shan drove up in the city dray. Just one thing to do, go in clothes on, which Shannie did. If one performed in this day as Shannie did then, he would hit the headlines in all the metropolitan papers.

"The affair was kept a secret for years. I, for one, have never forgotten that scene of terror. Don't tell me that Shannie hasn't got the stuff in him. Shannie has been my hero to this day.

"Yours very truly, Ralph STODDARD."

Shannon Ransler WINTERSTEEN Jr. passed away at his home in Republican City, Nebraska on 02 FEB 1940 at the age of 76 years, 9 months and 6 days. He is buried in the Republican City Cemetery.

It is interesting to note that the Probate Records for Shannon WINTERSTEEN Jr. lists his heirs, Gladys and Vaude each receiving 1/3 and his deceased daughter, Anita's two children Guy and Rodney as receiving 1/6 each. No mention is given to his deceased son, Lemuel's children. Family stories tell of a rift between Lemuel and his family and that is why he moved his wife and children to Canada. Very little contact was ever made between the families after that although it was noted in Lola's obituary that her health started failing after the loss of her son, Lemuel on Mother's Day, 1939.

I would like to note that Shannon Ransler WINTERSTEEN Jr.'s death certificate is not correct. It lists his mother's maiden name as "Elizabeth Waggoner". This is not correct. His real parents are Abigail E. BASQUIN and Shannon Ransler WINTERSTEEN Sr. There is a marriage license, pension and military papers and affidavits to prove this fact. An explanation for the wrong name on the death certificate is that it was filled out and signed by his wife, Lola and since she herself was not in the best of health, maybe she misunderstood the question on the form. Also, it is believed that Shannon Jr.'s mother might have been remarried to a Waggoner at the time of her death. Since I have found legal papers that in fact document his true parents, I am not too concerned with the error on the death certificate.

Lola Valentine SKEELS was born on 14 FEB 1867 in Uniontown, Stark County, Ohio to Samuel Warren SKEELS and Amanda MITCHELL. She was the oldest of nine children.

Lola received a teacher's certificate in 1884 and began working as a school teacher at age 16 in the Republican City area in 1883-1885 and 1887-1888. She taught school in a sod house school. School terms were shorter then, about 3 months in length. She was paid $20.00 a month. Lola also worked for WCTU (Women's Christian Temperance Union) and was a charter member of the Women's Relief Corp Against Booz. She was the State President for the Relief Corp in 1922. She was a good artist and painter. She had good talent and had some lessons at the old McPherson Normal College in Republican City, Nebraska. Some of her paintings are still in the family.

Lola was very community minded and was quite active in several civic organizations, including serving as an officer for the Republican City, Nebraska Community Library Association that was organized on March 23, 1924.

With the exception of short terms of residence in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Orleans, and Palisade, Nebraska, Shannon and Lola WINTERSTEEN spent their married life in Republican City, Nebraska.

Lola was converted to the Presbyterian Church at the age of 14 later becoming a member of the Methodist Church and remaining a faithful member.

Lola was very religious and strict, but also a devoted wife and mother, that had a hard time showing affection to those she loved.

Lola Valentine (SKEELS) WINTERSTEEN passed away on 27 DEC 1945 at Republican City, Harlan County, Nebraska and is buried in the Republican City Cemetery.

My great-great-grandparents:

Shannon Ransler WINTERSTEEN Sr.
Abigail E. BASQUIN

Shannon Ransler WINTERSTEEN Sr. was born on 02 APR 1839 in Ohio to James WINTERSTEEN Jr. and Sally ROATH. He was the second child of nine.

Abigail E. BASQUIN was born on 01 DEC 1841 in Ohio to Oliver BASQUIN and Mary Jane TIDD. She was one of seven children.

On 03 MAY 1859 Shannon WINTERSTEEN was united in marriage to Abigail E. BASQUIN at Monteville, Geauga County, Ohio. He was 20 and she was 18 years old. To them two children were born:

(1) Drette Cecilla WINTERSTEEN b. 01 APR 1860, Chardon, Ohio d. (?), m. LUCAS.;

(2) Shannon Ransler WINTERSTEEN (Jr.) b. 26 APR 1863, Thompson, Huntsburg, Ohio, d. 02 FEB 1940, Republican City, Harlan County, Nebraska.

The Civil War broke out, and like many men in his family, Shannon R. WINTERSTEEN Sr. enlisted into the military service on 08 SEP 1862. He was mustered into Company F of the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Shortly after he enlisted, however, he became ill with typhoid fever. He had a long bought with the illness and on 29 APR 1863, just three days after his son, Shannon Ransler WINTERSTEEN Jr. was born, he died at the Armory Square Hospital in Washington, D.C.

His body was taken back to Ohio and he was buried in the Monteville, Geauga County, Ohio Cemetery.

After Shannon R. WINTERSTEEN Sr. died, Abigail found herself a young 22 year old widow of two small children.

Tilden W. PORTER was appointed Guardian of the minor children of Shannon WINTERSTEEN, Sr. Mr. PORTER later became insane and Shannon WINTERSTEEN, Jr. had to get a new guardian in 1883 . Alfred T. SMITH of Republican City, Nebraska was appointed the new guardian. This was done to enable Shannon WINTERSTEEN, Jr. and his sister, Drette WINTERSTEEN to collect back pension money from their father's service in the Civil War that was due them. It seems that they had received the pension money up through 1876, but then it stopped and their father, Shannon WINTERSTEEN, Sr. was dropped from the pension rolls in 1880. This must of been due to the fact that their first guardian had gone "insane" and was not taking care of their legal business.

Six years later on 25 MAR 1869 Abigail BASQUIN WINTERSTEEN married John Watson TIDD. He too, however, apparently died because she then married John HUBER (Family Group #1/20c). Abigail and John also had two children:

(1) John HUBER Jr. b. Orange County, California, date unknown. John was living in Orange County, California in February 1940; and

(2) Agnes HUBER, b. Orange County, California, date unknown. Agnes apparently passed away prior to February, 1940 as she is not listed as a surviving relative in her step-brother, Shannon WINTERSTEEN's obituary.

However, it is unknown if these two children were both of theirs of if just his from a previous marriage. In Shannon WINTERSTEEN's obituary John HUBER is listed as a half-brother. No date is known on their births. The location of their births is also questionable. John HUBER, Jr. and Agnes HUBER are believed to have lived in Orange County, California in 1940. No proof has been found to prove this as yet. In 1881 John HUBER was still living in Republican City, Nebraska.

In 1875 the family moved to Nebraska and settled near Republican City, Nebraska.

Drette Cecilla WINTERSTEEN married John LUCAS in 1876 in Phillips County, Kansas. John LUCAS was born 1844 in New York. John's father was born in Connecticut and his mother in Rhode Island. In 1880 they are known to have lived in Republican City, Nebraska. To them one daughter was born;

(1) Adella LUCAS, b. 1877, Nebraska

John LUCAS apparently died between 1880- 1886 as Drette married W. A. BUCKLEY in 1886 in Phillips County, Kansas.

My great-great-grandparents other children:

John M. LUCAS
Drette Cecilla WINTERSTEEN

John M. LUCAS was born 1844 in New York. The names of his parents and siblings are unknown at this time. John's father was born in Connecticut and his mother in Rhode Island.

Drette Cecilla WINTERSTEEN b. 01 APR 1860, Thompson, Geauga County, Ohio d. (?). She was one of two children born to Shannon WINTERSTEEN and Abigail BASQUIN.

John LUCAS and Drette WINTERSTEEN were married in 1876. The place of their marriage is unknown. In 1880 they lived in Republican City, Nebraska and John's occupation was an attorney. Drette's brother, Shannon WINTERSTEEN, age 14, was living with them at the time the 1880 Census was taken. Shannon was listed as a common laborer. Drette and John are known to have had one child:

(1) Adella LUCAS, b. 1877 in Nebraska.

After John LUCAS died, Drette WINTERSTEEN LUCAS remarried W. A. BUCKLEY in 1886 at Phillips County, Kansas.
